MEMORIES OF WU JEIPING
Personal Physician to China’s Leaders
A story about the cost of giving up control of one’s life.
A memoir by OLIVIA COX-FILL
FAILURE IS THE MOTHER OF SUCCESS
As a medical student, Wu Jeiping didn't just play tennis and football, he absolutely excelled at both and just cruised along as a student until he was diagnosed with Tuberculosis. In the months of mandated isolation he contemplated the Chinese proverb, realizing that failure could find him too, and that he could be poised to fail medical school. It was a serious wake-up call for Wu Jeiping and after many years of hard work and commitment, he was able to demonstrate that he was the very best.
When Wu Jeiping was selected by Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai as his personal physician, the doctor had little choice in the matter, but he had even less so when the Premier informed him that he had been chosen by Chairman Mao's wife as her personal physician. The appointment transformed his life, though not always in a positive way.
The Author got to know Dr. Wu and interviewed him over the course of several years, gathering his vivid, unique and painful recollections of his career and contacts with the Chinese leadership. This memoir chronicles how a capitalist turned to Communism and, having embraced it, lived to regret its methods.
